FILLINGS
Once a cavity has been discovered, Ideus Family Dental Care offers the choice of three
filling materials:
• Porcelain – better for large cavities in teeth with heavy chewing pressure, and can
match tooth color
• Silver Amalgam – a mix of several metals good for smaller cavities;
an inexpensive option
• Composite resin – durable and tooth-colored; best for small to medium cavities and
moderate chewing pressure
WHAT IS A CAVITY?
A cavity is a hole left behind after tooth decay destroys part of a tooth. The cavity in the
tooth still contains the bacteria that created it. Left unchecked, this decay will continue
to spread and damage the tooth. When adding a filling, we clean away the decay inside
the cavity before filling it in.
WHAT IS A FILLING?
Fillings prevent bacteria or plaque from building up inside cavities, which could lead to
serious infections. Fillings reinforce the tooth, to keep it from chipping, cracking, or
breaking inward from trauma. Without a filling, even minor cavities could hinder the
health and function of your teeth.
CROWNS
WHAT IS A CROWN?
A crown is a covering that encompasses the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape and size. A crown protects and strengthens the tooth structure that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations.
Porcelain crowns are the most popular, they look like your natural teeth. Porcelain crowns are made to match the shape, size, and color or your teeth giving you a natural, long-lasting beautiful smile.
Reasons for crowns:
• Broken or fractured teeth
• Cosmetic enhancement
• Decayed teeth
• Fractured fillings
• Large fillings
• Tooth has a root canal
What is the process in receiving a crown treatment?
A crown procedure usually requires two appointments. Your first appointment will include taking an impression that will be used to create a custom crown. A mold will be created to provide a temporary crown which will stay on your tooth for approximately two weeks until your new crown is fabricated by a dental laboratory.
At your second appointment your temporary crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new crown will be carefully placed to ensure the spacing and bite are accurate.
BRIDGES
A dental bridge is a fixed appliance to replace missing teeth.
Reasons for a fixed bridge:
• Fill space of missing teeth
• Maintain facial shape
• Prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position
• Restore chewing and speaking ability
• Restore your smile
• Upgrade from a removable partial denture to a permanent dental appliance
What is the process in a dental bridge procedure?
A dental bridge procedure may require two appointments. While the teeth are numb,
the two anchoring teeth are prepared by removing a portion of enamel to allow for
a crown. Next, a highly accurate impression is made which will be sent to a dental
laboratory to be fabricated. A temporary
bridge will be made and worn for several weeks until your next appointment.
On the second visit, the permanent bridge will be checked, adjusted, and cemented
for a proper fit. The new bridge will be permanently cemented at a later time.
DENTURES
Dentures & Partial Dentures
A denture is a removable appliance to replace missing teeth. Dentures are made to resemble natural teeth and may improve a smile.
There are two types of dentures – complete and partial. Complete dentures are used when all teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. In addition, partial dentures prevent other teeth from shifting.
Reasons for dentures:
• Complete Denture – Loss of all teeth
• Partial Denture – Loss of several teeth
• Enhancing smile and facial tissues
• Improving chewing, speech, and digestion
What is the process in receiving dentures?
The process of receiving dentures will require several appointments over a 2-week period. Impressions and measurements are taken and used to create a custom denture. Several “try-in” appointments may be necessary to ensure proper shape, color, and fit. At the final appointment, we will adjust and place the completed denture, ensuring a natural and comfortable fit.
Once facial muscles and gum tissue adjusts to the dental appliance, all chewing, speech and saliva flow will return to normal.
