ORAL CANCER SCREENING

AN ORAL cancer screening doesn’t require any special preparation. We may conduct
an oral cancer screening during the dental exam.
WHAT IS ORAL CANCER ?
A malignancy of the lips, tongue, floor of mouth, salivary glands, buccal mucosa,
gingiva, palate. Most oral cancers are linked to tobacco use and/or smoking and
tend to spread rapidly. High risk factors for oral cancers include: alcohol abuse,
poor dental and oral hygiene, chronic irritation (rough teeth, dentures, etc.).
Oral cancers may begin as leukoplakia or mouth ulcers.
Symptoms include:
• Ulcer or sore in your mouth
• Red or white patch in your mouth
• Unexplained pain in your mouth or ear
• Unexplained lump in your neck
• Sore or painful throat
• Croaky voice or difficulty swallowing

Dental Cleanings & Exams

Regular dental cleanings/exams are an important part of preventive health care. During the dental exam, our hygienist will clean your teeth and check for cavities and gum disease. We will also assess your risk of developing other oral health problems, as well as check the jaw, neck and mouth for abnormalities. Our comprehensive dental exam includes dental X-rays or other diagnostic procedures. For children coming to the dentist for the first time, we may demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques. We may cover factors that can affect you or your child’s oral health and possible cosmetic improvements to teeth appearance.

Fluoride Treatments

Our dental office offers treatment options for both adults and children. If there is a
history of tooth decay or Dr Ideus sees tooth decay during the initial patient exam,
a fluoride treatment plan may be recommended beyond brushing at home.

Topical Fluoride

Topical fluoride strengthens erupted teeth by infusing the mineral into the tooth
enamel, strengthening the tooth. We will polish and dry your teeth before treatment.
Topical fluoride treatments can be made of gel or foam and come in a variety of flavors.

Systemic Fluoride

Systemic fluoride treatments are for teeth that have erupted and for those teeth still under
the gums. We offer tablets and drops for this type of fluoride treatment. The last word on
fluoride is it helps with protecting the teeth by seeping into the enamel and drawing the
calcium and phosphate that’s naturally present in the saliva. The minerals in fluoride boost
the teeth’s natural healing process and makes teeth more resistant to future decay.

Sealants

Applying sealants is a fast, easy process that can be accomplished without any anesthesia or sedation. Before the sealants are applied, we will clean and polished your teeth to prevent plaque, tartar, and bacteria from being sealed into the tooth. Next, the tooth will be gently etched where the sealant will be placed, then rinsed and dried. Once the tooth is prepped, Dr. Ideus will brush on the dental sealant and use a special light for about 30 seconds to set the sealant. Dr. Ideus will monitor that there is full coverage on the teeth and that the sealant is hardened before the patient leaves the office.

Digital X-Rays

As a dental office, we cannot provide an accurate diagnosis, even for a cleaning, without x-rays. Dr Ideus and staff want to ensure we are providing the best care to our patients, and without x-rays, we could miss various oral health hazards that x-rays provide. To prevent any unnecessary costs, we will first ask your previous dental office to send us your x-rays.
